Visual Editor - Smarty: Unknown Resource Type 'backend'

Hello,

Title kind of says most of my issue.

When I try to use the visual editor I get the large red 'Service Unavailable' page. And under it to the left it says:

Smarty: Unknown resource type 'backend' -->

Any ideas how to resolve this?
