Sitemap for Google help please

I have my site map at mysite/sitemap.html . Within Google’s webmaster tools, I tell them my map is at /sitemap.html, however, I just keep getting an error that says: “Unsupported file format

Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.” I looked up thier guidelines, but nothing seems wrong and they do allow for a “General Web Sitemap,” which I assume thats what a html page is.

Any ideas whats causing this and how to fix it? Thank you.

Have you tried this post?..

Yeah, I saw that but figured it was outdated because its from Oct. 06. Was hoping it was going to as easy as what I was first trying to do. Seemed like it should of worked. If I cannot get the simpler method to work I will try that.

Any other ideas on how to get my “easier” method to work? Thank you!

BTW, I also saw this: http://forum.cs-cart.com/showthread.php?t=4585&highlight=google

A little newer post. Is one easier and more effective than the other? Would really just love to tell Google my page is /sitemap.html and be done with this.

I used the first option and it works fine. Do you have your SEO switched on and if yes have you dropped your HTML Catalogue?

BarryH

Yes, I have SEO, but no I have not tried droooing the catalog. Not sure what that would do. Do you think that would work? Do I drop it, then regenerate it?

Im really beginning to wonder if sitemaps must be in XML fomat and cannot be in html.

Yes google sitemaps are xml sitemaps. But the if generated by php the page can be give a mime-type of xml. I’m not sure if it’s based on the content, the mime-type, or the extension.

I’ve tried the Mod as suggested here: http://forum.cs-cart.com/showthread.php?p=31932#post31932

but get the same error after several attepmts:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_SL, expecting ‘,’ or ‘;’ in mysite…/include/customer/google_sitemap.php on line 21

Any ideas how to fix this?

Ok, I got it to work after using the code Honey2000 posted here : http://forum.cs-cart.com/showthread.php?t=1179&page=6
