You can simply delete category images since they are used only for subcategory view.
Hi, we have prepared a small add-on for you. It disables subcategories on the category details page in the customer area. It is compatible with version 4.3.x.
Just upload it on the Manage add-ons page in the admin panel, clear the cache and check the results in the customer area.

another quick question, is there any way to prevent the products from being shown. i only want the products to show from specific category. at the moment, all products are displayed that are in sub categories.
Settings->General->Show products from subcategories of the selected category:
