Ok so apologies in advance - but this is going to be a bit of a long winded post.
I have just been given a website to give a facelift to.
The website was done by someone else on CS cart and he’s just handed me the backup of the whole website and all the log in details.
Just to warn you…I have never used CS Cart before - I am more of a designer than a web developer - I know css and html - but I don’t have much experience with PHP, mySQL or databases.
I have just logged into the administrator panel and clicked on design and the only tabs I have are “Quick Links” and “Top Menu”. When I was looking through the CS Cart demo they have loads more options. Including template editor which is what I wanted…
Why would these links/options not be there?
Also the next query I have is how do I set up this website on our hosting?
I have been given two zip files one which I believe is the database back up and a another which is the public_html. I image its not as simple as just uploading these files to we web hosting?
If anyone has any insight (a link to a tutorial etc.) on how to set this up I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me on this. I hate being such a noob with these matters - its not fun!
Cheers Nikky
First you need to figure out what version your cart is. Extract your public_html archive into the document root of your site and look at the file config.php. You should see a define(‘CART_VERSION’, );
The will tell you what version you are on. It sounds like you are on the Community version and if so, you options for extending it will be very limited.
You remember what they say rolls down hill?? Looks like you’re playing catch.
Hey! Thanks for your reply…
I couldn’t find exactly what you were asking for… but i found this…
define(‘PRODUCT_NAME’, ‘CS-CART’);
define(‘PRODUCT_VERSION’, ‘2.1.4’);
define(‘PRODUCT_STATUS’, ‘’);
Does that help?
I looked into the community version and had a play with the demo - and there’s still loads more that you can do with it than the design capabilities I have with the cart I’ve been given.
Yeah I really am playing catch… you should see the subject of the shopping cart too… Its days like this I love my job haha.
Ooo… sorry I missed a line of code…
// COMMUNITY|PROFESSIONAL|MULTIVENDOR
define(‘PRODUCT_TYPE’, ‘PROFESSIONAL’);
This was under that code I pasted before…
Does that make it the professional version?
Yep, my bad. Memory isn’t what it used to be…
You should also see a PRODUCT_TYPE just below the others that indicates the “Edition”.
I don’t have amy experience with community edition other than I know they strip out a bunch of skins and addons. But otherwise, it should be essentially the same.
But you have a job and what more fun could you have than trying to figure out what someone else did?
Yes, that means it is the Professional. Your Design tab should have:
- Logos
- Design mode
- Blocks
- Appearance settings
- Quick links
- Top menu
- Sitemap
- Template editor
- Skin selector
As the tabs… You might have to load from scratch and that might be easier than trying to figure out what somone else did.
- Design mode
Yeah my design tab only has “Quick Links” and Top Menu"
So to load from scratch would I need to buy the licence for the professional one?
Or is there a way just to reset it without having to do that?
(just because the client wont want to pay that)
Hmm this is a bit of a pain! All I want to do is make it look pretty as at the moment it is awful!
If you have the professional version and are using it unlicensed then you are in violation of the license agreement and cs-cart will probably contact your host and have you shut down for copyright violation.
Suggest you either use the community version or purchase a license for the professional version. Your client should be willing to ante up the cost of the cart. It is the best value on the market.
I definitely don’t want to break and licensing laws… I thought as a licence was already bought for the website, now I was taking it over the licence would just come with it.
That’s what I mean about the client not wanting to pay for it - they already have done once when they were setting it up - they wont want to again.
Or do I personally have to have a licence to do anything with it?
No You dont personally hae to do any licensing, Get in touch with CS Cart help desk and ask them if it is licenced. Tell them the URL it was used for before and they will tell you if there is a licence already been issued.

It sounds as though she’s been working with a developer/designer whom prefers to limit her functionality. Also more than likely she’s got a “limited” administrator account that does not show the full admin panel.
Licensing, I think her designer/developer purchased under their own name as to lock clients into keeping their services. (JACKASSES)
