Migrating Customer Data from other shopping cart

The previous shopping cart software used by my client was limited in features and functions so my services were retained to implement a new cart. Of course, I chose CS-Cart because it is feature rich and easy for clients to manage.

One of the issues that I can see on the horizon is migrating existing customer data to the new cart so she will not lose her history. I looked in the administration are and see no method for importing user data. In fact, this does not appear to be somethin that anyone has started a topic about yet, surprisingly.

Has anyone run across this issue and, if so, what is the best way to go about this? I’ve looked at the database and can see both an order and a user table, but I don’t know if there are any relationships between these two … or it isn’t clear.

This is a scenario where a database schema, or an explanation of what is in the tables and how they are related, would truly be helpful.

Cart migration has been a weakness for pretty much all shopping carts, CS, X, etc. You can export/import products, categories and the like, but not the important information such as orders and customer data.

There is a service out there that does this, but I do not have experience with them. I stumbled across them when looking to do the same thing you are facing, but decided to do it myself, which was dreadfully slow and cumbersome, not to mention the data wasn’t always complete.

Here is a link to their website. THey go by the number of prods/customers/orders that you have to convert to give you a quote. If you have a large number of all of them, it can get to be a bit expensive.

Maybe you can find another solution, but thought I’d share what I found when researching this.

If you can tell me what format your exported data is in, I could look into what it would take to import that data into your cs-cart database… PM me and we’ll talk.

I’m actually interested to hear what you did to accomplish this, Tim. Would you care to share your methods with the class?

Most likely he accessed the database of his old cart. Studied the table formats and how that cart stored the orders and customers. Then he studied how cs cart stores this data. After that you need to write some code to export the data from the old cart and format/parse it properly to work in the new cart. This is basically the watered down way to do it.

The work involved is most likely over the head of the majority of store owners. Although it isn’t that hard, it can be time consuming and if you have no idea how to manage a database, write code, or even decipher code and storage techniques used in cs cart then it is gonna be a long road.

I would recommend taking tbirnseth up on his offer. He’s very familiar with cs cart, has knowledge of how to program, and is a helpful forum member.

Tim and I are in discussions but I do have above average knowledge of databases and code anbalysis/creation so I’m not a typical store owner.

Cart migration is not a weakness any more. Using Cart2Cart service there is an oportunity to move not only products, but also order and customer data. And the migration process is totally automated, so you don't require technical knowledge to rerform it easily and smoothly. For more information go to:

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but my experience with Cart 2 Cart is not very good. After six weeks of importing and migrating over and over again, it is not possible to get product options, product codes and stock imported, nor can it be used. Another problem with the several attempts is that my disc quota is now beyond 4GB. So first we have to find a way to remove all the duplicate files.

So, if you have a very large database to migrate you might want to consider renting a freelance professional to do the job in stead of relying on an automated service.

On the other hand, it also might be a CS Cart issue. Still working on this error.

Not saying that Cart 2 Cart is no good, by the way. Just my experience.

Hello,

Yes, use cart2cart, I had used them before.

Hello Jansen,

sorry you had issues with service functioning. However, the reasons for that may be different. Maybe your store configuration settings need customization. Have you tried to contact Cart2Cart support? They can help you find the root of the error and fix it effectively.

By the way, Cart2Cart team includes professionals who specialize in service development while freelancers can not guarantee high quality of work. Moreover, they often migrate data manually which takes much time and results in data loss or duplication. It's definitely not the option for large database migration.
