Does anyone know anything about how we could setup Cs-Cart to loosely compress product images? That can save on an average of 10-25% in file size when doing so. I just have no clue where to start with it. It may not sound like a big deal but everything KB counts 
Having an addon to compress images would be great, something like this:

Under Settins->Thumbnails you have the option for thumbnail compression quality (0-100), reducing this value will reduce your thumbnail sizes (you will need to clean your thumbnail cache after changes). Though no other advanced compression features available for jpeg or png.
