I need to upgrade my site which is 4 years out of date. Is 4.3 to 4.12 a big task or will it work without breaking the frontend etc? I don't have any addons that arent stock.
It can depend on many factors (correct file permissions, database size, etc). In general, it should not be too hard. Try to make copy of live website and upgrade it at first

You should not face any problems with instock addons. Please only note that option combinations will be generated to variations
