We have been informed recently that our current server host will no longer be providing bare metal servers and moving to a VPS-only business model. So I was after some advice and maybe recommendations please.
We currently have a bare metal server, the specs are probably overkill for what we need, to be honest. We have a 6C/12T CPU, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD.
We are currently running v4.9.2 SP1. We average around ~8k visitors per month, and we have 782 active products.
I’m thinking a VPS should be fine for us - any advice/recommendation is appreciated!
With ~8k visitors/month and ~780 products, your current bare metal server (6C/12T, 32GB RAM) is definitely overkill for a CS-Cart store of this size.
In most cases, stores with similar traffic run perfectly fine on:
2 CPU cores
4 GB RAM
50GB NVMe storage
A properly optimized environment matters much more than raw hardware, especially for CS-Cart.
If you’re moving from bare metal to VPS, I’d recommend choosing a provider that offers CS-Cart–optimized hosting (proper PHP tuning, Redis support, database optimization, etc.), rather than just generic VPS resources.
For reference, we run CS-Cart–optimized hosting plans starting from small configurations designed specifically for stores of this size:
You can always scale resources later if traffic grows, but starting small is usually the most cost-effective approach.
Most performance issues I see are not caused by lack of resources, but by missing tuning and configuration.
