What would be the best of showing that a product has multiple colour / style options from the category page? So thats its easily noticeable that a product has colour options.

Select the 'Grid without options' as a value of the 'Product list default view' setting on the 'Settings'-'Appearance' page in the administrator area.

How do you want to display it? If the product has options, the "Select options" button is displayed instead of the "Add to cart" one. So you can find the language variable for the "Select options" text and change it to something more informative
Or do you need all options displayed on the Category page, like they are displayed on the Product Details page (with select boxes, radio buttons, etc.)?
I'd still prefer the customer go into the actual product if they want to select the option - but I would just like a clean, easy way of showing that item has an option. To be honest when I refer to option, 99% of the time its going to be a colour option only.

By default, the Grid without options view displays 'Select options' instead of 'Add to cart' button. This differs products without options from products with options.

Well I changed to Grid View Without Options and it isn't what I wanted. For a start, I don't want my products displayed in a list and all it does is add a gear symbol which apparently indicates(?) that the product has an option. Its not a very clear way of displaying it and even I didn't notice it at first, so I can expect all customers to notice what I didn't.
