Upgrading Site Seems Frozen.

Hello,

We're (finally) upgrading from 4.2.4 to 4.3.1 but when we do the upgrade it starts the "dotted line" process but always freezes at a certain point. I even wait 30 minutes without it moving. No matter how many times I restart, it always freezes at the same point.

my upgrade.log file's last line is this:

I've tried clearing the cache, verifying permissions, although it seems the permissions they recommend (777) are no longer possible on servers (can only go 755).

What could be causing this?

Our host upgraded our php to 7.x, then our site died and was inaccessible. So we asked them to downgrade us back to to 5.6 in order for our site to work and do the upgrade.

Ask your hosting if they can turn on php 5.3 for a moment (for upgrade from 4.2.4 to 4.3.1), maybe that would help.
