Display Item Position In Compact List Template On Front End

Hey all,

I am trying to modify the COMPACT LIST view whereby the product position from the sorting is shown in the front end.

for example, in a category I have 5 parts with positions of 1,2,3,4 and 5. These position numbers relate to a diagram item number.

In the COMPACT LIST template I want to show this postion number next to a product title. screen shots below for desired outcome...any ideas?

As far as I remember, this information is not retrieved from database. So it is required not only change template, but php functions as well
