Vps Bogging Down When Modifying Theme, Why?

I have made a copy of my web site (small site selling maybe 400 products) into a sub folder as a dev site as I am updating from Vivashop theme 2.x to version 3, which is a major update that requires you to basically redo the home page and other parts of the site.

The last two or three evenings as I've been making changes to the blocks, etc. after a short time the site becomes unresponsive and starts giving me timeout messages. Then when I check other sites on my VPS (I sell hosting, so I have maybe a dozen other sites on this VPS), they are also non-responsive.

If I wait a while, everything comes back up and operates normally. Rinse and repeat.

So simply editing the layout blocks in my theme overwhelms my VPS. Really?

I've contacted chat support 3 times (I'm with InMotion) and they have tried several things, but nothing fixes the problem. After some time, the 3rd person I chatted with said I needed to log a ticket, which I did. They responded to the ticket this morning and asked how to reproduce the problem.

Does anyone have any insight?

I am on InMotion's VPS-2000HA-S plan here (in case you need to know specs):

Thanks in advance.

6GB is not enough for an eshop and other applications on the same VPS.

How much do you recommend for the latest CS-Cart Ultimate with around 400 products?

Best guess, your database is consuming all your ram causing the kernel to forcibly clear all caches.

I would recommend to start around with 12-16GB.

What is your suggested fix for that? Toss more money to the hosting company for more RAM list isixhosting is suggesting?

My vps has 24GB of raw and clearing cache on 4.8.1 was making server non responsive for maybe 5mins. But after upgrade to 4.12.1 everything is rocket fast..

If you are running a dozen sites or so, for sure. Normally we run CS-Cart on at least 4 cores / 16 GB of ram if the database is also located on the same server. If not, we tend to use compute optimized containers (using e.g. graviton), with 4 cpu cores / 4-8 gb of ram.

Can you log onto the inmotion panel, and see which resource wall you are hitting?

Either way performance of cs-cart on cpanel is going to suck

I have managed to get all the updates done. I have been looking at maybe switching to a dedicated server.

What's the deal with cPanel? Why does that make CS-Cart "suck"? What is the alternative?

I'm not sure the recommended resources should be based on the number of products but the traffic the site is generating. 12-16GB Ram for a site with 10 visitors per day is very excessive even with 400 products.

Cpanel is set for volume not speed.

For cscart to fly you need

opcache

php-fpm

redis

optionally TLS1.3 & Brotli

normally 4gb of ram is plenty for cscart with only 400 sku's

I don't know in which region of the world you are targeting your audience but if it is not far from Canada or France try Planethoster.

OK thanks. I'm in the USA. Since I'm already with InMotion, I'd probably stay with them if I was to go to a dedicated server. Their prices seem quite good.

I don't understand why some people who can't work with cPanel still claim that it's slow, that it slows down the speed of web pages and similar nonsense. cPanel is one of the leaders in terms of Linux control panels on the market for some couple of years and cPanel has a market share of about 24.7%. Also cPanel is one of the most popular choices of control panel, because it makes it simple to run your website.

We run CS-Cart pages on shared servers with thousands of products without any problems. Here is an example. This e-shop has about 2000 products. https://www.pricesky-parochne.sk/

Because it literally is slower on a kernel level... https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=spring-2020-distros&num=8

CentOS is just inherintly slower than e.g. ubuntu / clear linux.

I'm a newbie here. I don't know much about it. But I would like to learn more and educate myself.
