Isn't that the point of alt text?

No, SEO images is not just alt text, but also file name keyword in url, directory/category keyword in url, just like keyword in domain name.

Then what is the point of alt text?

Why can't you rename the image before you upload it?

So you're saying that if your have an image named "abcde.jpg" with an alt text of "My preferred image name" that it isn't as good as "My preferred image name.jpg" with an alt text of "My preferred image name"?

I think it would be best to spend your resources elsewhere.

By the way, it's not that difficult nor time consuming to convert image names. Most of the time would be spent on downloading and uploading. But then you still have a problem with newer products/images.

Edit: Also, that should be the vendors responsibility not yours.

That's correct according to many SEO specialists, and the reason why we always rename image before uploading them. I agree with OP a script would be quite handy.

So basically alt text is completely useless unless you are vision impaired?

It sounds like a mess to me. How do you keep from having duplicates or too short or too long of names?

The almighty Amazon doesn't use either one. I guess money has more pull than SEO practices.

It's not useless. It's part of the equation. Filename might have only 0.01% impact and alt text 0.1%, or not. I don't know. But many SEO specialists say filename has an impact, as well as of course the alt text.
