Set the conditions of the products which can use the coupon then there shouldn't be an issue unless i'm missing something here?
Just add a condition to say the Categories NOT IN 'your discounted category'. Do you mean there is a bug where other promotion is active it will override the other conditions? If so report it as a bug :-)
You should also check the Priority and whether you have the "Stop other rules" checkbox set.
If you have a higher Priority catalog promotion that discounts a product (higher than your coupon code), then you can have the "Stop other rules" checkbox ticked and it won't honor your coupon code. Not sure if that will be limited to that individual item only or not.
What about list price, quantity discount? How to exclude those?

I used list price rather often, but due to risk applying a promotion to such price I no longer use list price. Have simply running promotions ex 10% 15% 20% and assign products to dedicated promotions.. Problem is when product names are similar had to see sold products..
List price has only one purpose.... To provide a discount tag. It isn't used for anything else I'm aware of in the system. It is simply a marketing mechanism to make the user feel that they are getting a good deal. Everything is based off of price (quantiy 1, usergroups all).

It can be used by store owners to know the RRP from the manufacturer.
The way I do it: create a category called sale-items. Put products in the sale-items in the category. Then in you promotion logic category not in sale-items.
I have the same problem as I am wanting to run a 20% storewide promotion, but do not want to offer 20% off already discounted items or volume discounted products.
The coupon code needs to NOT be valid on these items.
I do not want to create a category of sale items as the store has roughly 4,000 products, and about 70% of them were to be part of the sale.
I know about the exclude other promotions, but this really is different.
I have used the promotion category and products and created a sale manually selecting everything I wanted to include and that works fine for a small promotion, but how to get CS-Cart to have a function that does the whole store, except for sale items, existing promotions and bulk discounted products is what I am looking for and hoping there is an addon or something I am just not seeing
Any help appreciated as I am still new to this sort of thing.
