We use the product id as the product identifier on the frontend in our store (instead of sku or product code) and our last product id was something like 33000. I recently added a new product and it created it with product code 10000001 (whoa!)
Is there any way to 'reset' this or get it back to a more realistic number?

Have you compared the product ID in the frontend with the product ID on the product editing page in the backend?
Are they identical?
If they are identical, the auto increment value has been changed in the database.
If they are not the same, the product ID works incorrectly.
First our version - it can be because of the third-party add-ons or other modifications.
