Taxes By Location

Taxes are defined by location. If I only have as a single location (Country) USA but 50 states listed under that location, how I can set up different taxes(%) for individual states? i.e. California, New York, Florida.

There is a way to implement it:

  1. go to Admin panel top menu > Shipping & Taxes > Locations
  2. click to a “+” button to add location. This way you can separately create as many new locations as you need
  3. go to Admin panel top menu > Shipping & Taxes > Taxes
  4. choose a tax
  5. follow to Tax rates tab. There you will see a list of locations and rate values
  6. specify the rates for certain states separately.

Given that tax rates always change and there are 48 states that have sales tax in USA (Montana and Oregon are the exceptions), you might want to use a 3rd party tax rate service that can do a better job of getting it right. Note too that many counties and cities also have varying tax rates. I.e. LA city, LA county and California is a different tax than someone from San Diego California.



You would then integrate the 'tax rate service' to get the appropriate tax for the city/state/zip being used as the shipping address and substitute that rate. It would be an investment up-front, but save you hours and hours of maintenance down the road in trying to manually keep 50 locations current with the current tax rates.



But as far as I know, Washington is the only state that expects a merchant in another state to collect WA state tax and then send them a quarterly check. However, so far, this has been unenforceable. However, they are working with UPS/USPS/FedEx to get reporting of deliveries for future audit capabilities. But I doubt small merchants are their target.



And, alternatively you could build a script that would create the 50 locations and update the tax info based on a spreadsheet of information and then just run it with new data once a quarter or whatever frequency makes sense.

Avalara works great for what you want and Cart Power has the connector to connect CS-Cart to Avalara. I have a couple of clients that use it.
