We are almost finshied with a new addon that will help stores with goods like printer toners or car accessories to give their clients a better way to look for a specific accessory when he knows his printer make-model exactly.
We call it 3step finder and you can have it as a block in all categories.

The client will choose his ecaxt car by car make/model/year

and the programm will the suggest those products that much his 3 step selection

The whole thought was to have a filter like function outside the difficult filter screens (and all of the work like features to filters convert bby product groups etc) in an own block with sequential (step by step ) selection and not all possible car makes, models pre load.
I has each own screen

where you can insert, sort, delete all three steps variants

Then you only need to head to ewach product and choose just like the customer, all three combinations for this product. (again Ajax)

Its a v3 compatible addon. We have no price at the moment. Let me hear your thoughts on that (addon, price suggestion etc)
We tend to bring a v2 later this year with csv import export functionality.

We already done this add-on. A relation between filters parent filter / child filters.
Selecting a parent will display only childs.
This was built exactly for a automobile shop for parts just as in your example.

We have done some addition to this tool like keep search settings when hit back after search, and add images to the top of the results.
We also put a new tab in product screen where you can see the compatibility list of that product/part
Last but not least we did a nice front page block for the search form

You know, than 1 part is for 100 makes and models, what happens, if you have that part?

Click on the 4th tab (its Compatibility in Greek)
You can see that you have showing only the car makes and you have to click to see the models and years. So the list will get smaller.
We have a switch so that if a make has more than 3 models in the list then it closes and you have to click.

The third tab is a combatibility list (like on the box of a part). You just press the Make you want (Audi, VW etc) and you see what for is good.
This specific part is for almost 180 different cars suitable

PS we have set to show for each make 3 rows. If that make has more than 3 rows then it is closed and you have to toggled it.
