Should I continue work on 3.06 or wait for ver.4

Hi guys, I just started setting up our new site and have a fresh install on ver.3.06. I'm wondering if I setup ver.4.0 beta can I keep the site and all the work done and implement the upgrade when the official release becomes available? Am I better off waiting until the official release becomes available? I have a particular requirement for Option quantities in products setup and I understand this will be available in ver 4.0.

Cheers…

4 should come soon, 1,2 months

In my opinion you can start develop on 4.0.1rc and record any core modification, and when stable version arrives you can easy transfer

More like 2 weeks at most !

Thanks guys, sounds good. I’ll crackon with 4.0.1rc and hope for the best.

You are welcome.

I really need to get my websites online. I halted the development on v3 when it became apparent that v4 is around the corner. So I would love to restart development. But various developers including Alt-Team and tbirnseth have strongly advised against it as CS-Cart has made significant changes before in previous beta periods. So its a risk to start now…

Even from the Release Candidate to actual release? Normally Release Candidate would imply no real significant changes are introduced.

I agree with this. Big differences between the betas and the final version.

We are testing, examining the betas, but starting the development, updates only after a stable release.

The thing holding me back is that the Store import tool wont be available until 4.02 or 4.03 - this could well be toward the end of the year, and i cant very well move my current 2.2.4 store without this tool. (or paying someone to write a massive query)

Just for info from past releases… About 1-2 releases after they provide an upgrade path for previous releases, the product becomes closer to production quality/stability. Hence if you run V4 on a production site anytime before about V4.0.4 or so, then you should consider yourself an early adopter.

I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly don't have time in my schedule to drop everything and start testing various releases as they pop out at about a 2 week frequency. Just watch the bug reporting system for a couple of weeks to get an idea of where the holes are and how quickly releases come. You should be able to determine stability by the time between releases and the quantity and severity of reported problems. Then, later, all the upgrade/import problems will surface.

Just my experience over 4-5 major releases (V2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 were major in my mind too). Granted, internal QA has improved but the demo store is never a good indicator of real-world and that's where internal testing stops.

Update: Note: as an addon developer and custom development shop, the changes in V4 are significant and will require time to adjust to. Docs are poor and incomplete (normal) and help desk will only say to contact their custom development team for any real technical support. So it will be a while before I expend any effort on V4 for my products. For any existing addon that does anything outside of template development, it's almost a line by line review/rewrite of the code. A waste of time in my opinion because the merchant doesn't end up with anything of any greater functional value in the end. All the changes are to give the developers something to play with.
