PayPal payments Pro

Hey guys, I'd appreciate some opinions!

I'm kicking around the idea of using PayPal for all my payments. I see that by using their premium level: “PayPal Payments Pro”, my customers wouldn't need to ever leave the site when they choose to pay via PayPal, which i like.

I was wondering if anyone here uses this method and what they think of it.

Also, PayPal's site says that some custom development is needed to integrate it, but is this necessary with CSC? I'm not sure if they mean the graphical interface (which CSC already has) or it there's a lot of behind the scenes coding required to get it to fly. In either case, what costs would be involved, if any?

Here's a link to PayPal's various options FWIW: PayPal Business |Händlerservices für KMUs | PayPal DE

I used PayPal Pro for about four years but quit a couple of months ago. The main reason for quitting is that by using Stripe, I don't have to pay a gateway fee (PayPal's is $30.00 a month). So, I now use Stripe for credit cards and anyone who wants to pay with their PayPal account still can using PayPal standard. I'm using the extra $30 month in my bank account to otherwise improve my site.

CS-Cart already has all the necessary hookups for PayPal Pro. Once you sign up to the service, you just need to set it up as your payment processor and go with it. I have to say that for the years I used it, it worked pretty much flawlessly. There are step by step instructions in the knowledgebase I believe for how to enter the settings.

Thanks for the feedback!

I may give them a go, as they discount their rates with higher volume. If I can manage to sell $10,000/month it's just 2.2%. Should make the $30 fee easier to handle.

BTW I spoke to a rep at PayPal yesterday and he mentioned that all the client data is stored on their servers so security is less of a headache. He also said that there was no need for an SSL with this solution as well (though I've already purchased one).

some follow ups…

  1. Did your customers have any clue that PayPal was involved in the transaction while they were paying (via changes in the address bar of their browsers or some other indication)?

  2. Does PayPal get mentioned on users credit card bills?

I ask this because whether it's fair or not, PayPal is often viewed as a payment means for mom & pop operations, and that's an image I'd rather avoid.

  3. I read elsewhere here that PayPal withholds a significant part of the money (30% or so) for a period of time before releasing it. Was that the case with you?
  1. No, there was no indication to the user that their payment was being processed by PayPal. However, they may have gotten a confirmation email from PayPal…not sure about that since I never bought anything from myself. :-) As the merchant, I got an email from PayPal for each transaction, so I think it’s entirely possible the customer did also. I terminated the Pro service a couple of weeks ago (after being totally sure that Stripe was going to work for me), otherwise I could have place a small test order for $1 and see what happened.

  2. Not sure about this. I would think you as the merchant would be the one on the card statement. Maybe someone else here can comment.

  3. That NEVER happened with me. The money was always instantly available for me to either spend or transfer to my bank account.

1.Customers never never my website unless they used their PayPal express card. Once they use that card they go to paypals site to complete transaction, then returns to your website upon completion. People that have a PP express card should be use to this process.

  4. I believe in regards to PP being related to a Mom & Pop shop, Yes if this is the only payment option you offer. However, when a customer see's the other different credit cards that you do offer, the mom & pop image will never be there. My business name is on the credit card statements.

  5. As far as with holding money, PP has not done that to me but I have heard that somewhere before too. This may be for new entities that have not established their own readabilities.

I have been using PP for a couple years and I am very happy with it.

I.

HATE.

PAYPAL.

Goes without saying that I will never accept it on my website, where my business partners agree with me at least.

The biggest hurdle from me is simply their attitude - Banks & Payment processors such as Authorize.net are part of the retail banking establishment whereas PayPal is not. Two sets of rules for two separate breeds of company.

I detest any establishment that can, on their own mind decide how a transaction is fraudulent and make their decision law.

So… Yeah… I hate PayPal with a passion, and yes I've been “burnt” by having a few $1,000 frozen in my account for a few weeks because getting paid in Euros is apparently fraud.

I will have to agree with JLS. Up until recently, I was using PayPal. Their fraud protection seems to protect against legit transactions but doesn't with fraudulent ones if that makes any sense. I was constantly having to do fraud detection myself after getting burned many times.

But aside from that, PayPal makes their own rules and they also apparently mix politics with business. PayPal recently contacted me and said that my account had limited access (basically I couldn't do anything send, receive, cancel, etc…) and that I would have to remove weapons related products from my site (which are perfectly legal here in the US) before they would reinstate my account. This was my final decision to leave PayPal because it didn't just shut down one of my sites, it shut them all down whether they were legit or not.

So yeah, all of these liberal democrat Obama loving companies such as PayPal/Ebay and Google that want to strip US citizens of their constitutional rights can F**K OFF and DIE!

I use paypal all the time for my business on ebay. When I eventually get my website up and running again is there any other payment provider I should be looking at it I want to stop using paypal? Are there any monitary benifits as they all charge fees?

Stay away from paypal as much as you can. Its a popular payment method, but they have a really bad attitude and have a habit of putting accounts in limbo for no reason. Its pretty hard to get that undone.

kingsleypress, How does one go about integrating Stripe with CSCart? And does it require customisation?

You need this addon:

Stripe Payment Add-On v3 from SecureMyshop - Third-Party Services - CS-Cart Community Forums

Works great, except it's not compatible with Twigmo.
