New to Forum saying hi and, Trouble shooting

Hi there fellow Cs-cart members,

I’m a newbie to the forum so go easy on me, I have had my Cs-Cart website since 2011. I love it, and the technical staff have been wizards with helping me out so I was a bit surprised when I read some of the posts saying that the customer service was below par, not my experience at all.

Well up until today everthing was fine on my website http://www.coralturner.co.uk, but now it has this strange message and warning, the only thing I have done recently is to add on the icons for Facebook etc.,

I didn’t add the quick links next to the logo, that was from a web developer, I did ask that we not have that but he went ahead anyway, which is why I am now teaching myself and hopefully will be learning from you all.

Three questions 1) does anyone how I get my page back to normal (I have logged a ticket, but was hoping to clear this up this evening if anyone is around - help) 2) when I do get back to normal can I just click on the update now? 3) top tab, I have one that says collection categories I want to remove this as its duplicated tried disabling but nothing happened, where I am going wrong? I did say I was a newbie all these questions in the first instant, I too want to be an expert like you guys  . Thanks in advance.

Hey, and welcome to the forum!

  1. I'd first mail my host to ask them if they updated php version or anything like that because you are getting these errors. My first guess would be that's what causing the problem.

My 2nd guess would be that you have edited a file in a text editor and uploaded it. Sometimes these editors screw up the layout of a file and you will get errors like this. Could this be the problem? If so, do you have a backup of the original file that you could upload to check?

The problem is that many editors seem to add additional blanks (spaces) and/or empty lines at the end of a file when you edit it. This so-called whitespace is then sent to the browser when the file is loaded and interferes with the header of a page.

If you do not have a backup, the fix is to remove that whitespace from the file. Read the error message carefully. It says “output started at …” followed by a file name and a line number. That is the file (and line) that you need to edit. Ignore the second file name - that is only a file that included the file that has the whitespace. The first file is the one you have to edit, not the second one.

In this case, your mysqli.php seems to be causing the problem.

Always backup your file before you start editing anything… now, as well.

  2. Well, updating is always a bit dangerous. If you have done all your edits in hooks,it should be possible, but strange things can always occur. I would advice copying your shop to another location (for example on yourdomain.co.uk/dev) and try it there first to see if things go well. Or you could ask an expert to do it at night time for you… so that if things break he can fix it when your customers are sleeping.

  3. You should be able to remove this at Design - top menu (just put it on disabled or remove)

    Hope this helps… !

Hi Super Duper and Amazingly Sexy,

Thanks for getting back to me, I have this morning contacted the host Servage so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be resolved today. The only changes I have made to my website recently was to add on the icon buttons for Facebook, Linkedin and YouTube, they all tested ok and the following day no problems, then this, which just happens to coincide with a publication coming out featuring my work :-(.

Quick update whilst typing to you, I have just received an email from Servage saying they have corrected the problem and I should see the changes in 3 hours - phew! Here’s hoping. I will of course follow your advice with the back-up of my files. As for the updating I will leave this in the hands of the experts - can you recommend anyone?

One last thing, I read on one of the replies about enabling the SEO module how can I check that I have this in place? I really appreciate you getting back to me as this has helped immensely. Have a great day and I will keep you posted, thanks again.

Go to Admin>addons and look for seo or you can check your browser address bar to see if it says the product name or a load of rubbish stuff.

Thanks

JOhn

Hey John,

What a star you are, I've just been to my admin panel, only to find that the SEO was not 'active', I can't believe it, the chap who was working with me on this initially assured me that everything was in place. I had been scratching my head for ages trying to figure out why the numbers were so low, now onto the next task! I've had a look at your website which is great and will be passing the details on my partners an Electrician and he's on varying sites throughout London, so one great turn deserves another. You guys are something else! Cheshire cats have nothing on me now!

All the ladies seem to adore Johnbol1, I am starting to become very jealous! B)

Hmm, I think i’ll have to remove my wife from my profile picture to get some action like John ;)
