maybe php has not been installed with the gd library (php-gd), check with your host or look for GD library in phpinfo

I Just did a new install of version 4.3.1 and I'm having the same issue.
The captcha image doesn't show up during registration.

I've contacted my host and they confirmed everything is installed correctly and should be working
