Is there a way I can allow the user to select which style they want to view the site in from a drop down list, in the same manner as languages?

This can be done but it takes some work. You would have to install all the skins you wanted active, and then look in your admin templates for
demo_skin_selector.tpl
its how cs does it on there demo store. but it will take some work and coding to get it done.
