how to manage dedicated server???

I plane to move to a dedicated server, and I have very little experience about it. I have been using CPanel on Shared Host, but the dedicated server provider doesn’t doesn’t offer Cpanel, all they have is Direct Admin. You guys probably have experience with Dedicated server that using linux/unix OS. Can you please provide me some information on how to manage it? Links, Suggest ebook/book will be very helpful. I will hire someone to setup the server, does anyone know which software That I can install on the server to check if there are back door on the server?

Thanks for helping

If you are totally green on server management I’d suggest you get someone to manage it for you.

It’s not just renting a dedicated server, install the software and run it. You need to upgrade everything on the whole server. Be up to date with security patches, optimize your server for performance, monitor, harden the security, solve emergency issues that might occur when your server goes down etc.

All this cannot be taught in an ebook or a course, it’s a long education or a lot of spare time over a few years with A LOT of reading to get the grip of how to really manage a server. You wont get far with a dedicated server and a control panel.

Take a look at wiredtree.com, they have both managed dedicated and vps servers. And they seem to be good so far.

Well said Zyles…

I don’t know I’m not a customer.

Brandito on the forums is, and I’ve not heard anything bad about them yet. They are a bit new but have good experience in webhosting since several years back.

Yes, I’d say go with a managed server or think about a VPS - the company I’m with offer upgrades up to the stage where you are the only site hosted on the box but its still being run as a VPS (just a really powerful one)… If you see what I mean!

Good luck, whatever you choose.

I’m wondering what is the reason you want to switch over to a dedicated server? It’s a big jump from hosted service, but it’s usually done because of a need to do things on the root level, such as installing programs, etc.

Hosting companies like to sell dedicated servers because they can charge more for the equivalent bandwidth you were using before. The only advantage to having a dedicated server is that you don’t share it with other websites, which results in your site being fed slightly faster. So, the question is, how much bandwidth do you actually use? If you’re pumping out Gigs then you just need to be on a box that’s not clogged up with 500 other websites. If you need to tinker with the root, then your own server is the way to go. However, just because you have a dedicated server, it doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. Most hosting companies that offer dedicated servers won’t let you do whatever you want to their computer. They own it and they don’t want you screwing it up, so you’re back to square one.

My advice: If you don’t have a huge storage and bandwidth need, switching to a service that doesn’t clog their server with a jillion websites is the way to go. (PM me about that and I’ll tell you what we offer). If you’re getting up there with storage and bandwidth, then a dedicated server might be the way to go. However, the best thing to do isn’t renting a server, it’s installing your own. This is called Co-Lo. With a Co-Lo service you install whatever server you want. If you need a hot rod, build it and install it. The point is, you get the quality you want with the computer, and all the storage you can fit into the box. Where our server is at, we’re connected to a 100 Mb/s so we have as much speed as we could ever want.

I have a full rack in the data center where my server is located and I would like to rent out the unused space. If you want your own server, we can build it for you, or, there are a gazillion servers that are ready to go. We sell those as well. If you really want to go with renting a server, we can work something out that would fit your needs as well. PM me or send an email and we can chat.

I like them. I have there VPS 256 so I can’t speak for there dedicated servers… But they by far have the best support of any host I have used.

Yep. They have been in the business for a long time, they actually used to work for LiquidWeb from what I heard. The only negitive thing that I have heard is that they don’t have the “fastest” network. Which makes since, because they are still new and are hosting there servers at there office. But they do hookup all there servers to 100 Mbps connections. But as I was saying above, they have the best support team I have ever dealt with. And there support is so good it more than makes up for the slightly slower network…

Hey,

I talked with WiredTree… And I was wrong in my original post. They don’t have there servers at their office. They have private datacenter (which happens to be near their main office) space for their servers at Printer’s Square carrier hotel and telecommunications center in Chicago. And get most of their bandwith from Level3.

I suppose I got confused somewhere during my pre-sales chats with them.

If you would like to read more about their datacenter, you can do so here:
