I passed this on to my host, the reponse was you wanted them to pass on customer details, thats just not going to happen in the UK folks.

Hello Dave. Thank you for advertising our offer to your hosting company. The customer details that are passed to our server are the customer’s name, email and the domain on which he installs CS-Cart. That’s all. The customer agrees to send these details to us by clicking the check box (you can see this form in the screenshot).
If you download the same CS-Cart Community from our website, it will be required to fill in the form that includes many more additional fields, so the name, email and domain is the minimum that we need to know in order to register a license.

I just passed on what they said, they use Softacuous and I think woul include it with that.
But if the install needs the host to pass any customer details at all, although it might sound a good idea, that is not possible as it’s against the UK data protection act. The customer must put those details in themselves.

If we allow the end-user to edit the value of each field, will it work for your hosting company?

The host can not pass on any information to a 3rd party. So the forms would have to be blank and filled by the customer themselves.
The data protection act is very strict in the UK, for example if I phoned the power company to talk about a problem with my mother’s account they would not speak to me about it. Of cause that is not the way it was intended to work and some companies do hide behind it rather then provide a proper service.

Afterall, this does only relate to the Free of charge, “Community Edition”, so the least they should require is knowing which businesses are getting & using this program for free, right?

Not exactly. The user’s name and email will not give us any information about the nature of his/her business while it is quite hard to get such statistics from several thousands of websites that are currently using CS-Cart Community (I do not know any other way, rather than browsing them all manually to find out what business they are in).
CS-Cart (any edition) is licensed per domain, so we need to know on what website it is installed to license it properly. The customer’s name and email allow us to contact him in case of a license issue or with special offers.
