This should work.
I prefer to dump the database with schema and import into an empty database - this assures that I have an exact duplicate of the database with no difference in schema (unfortunately, there are sometimes minor discrepancies between an upgraded database and one created by a fresh install).

Should they not both be exactly the same?
Mind that said I am not exactly sure even what a schema is. I assume it is how the tables relate.
My live restored to local install does not show any thumbnail images nor does ithave any side boxes.
I must have been up too late.
You will need to copy /images from your live site to get the images. You will also need to copy /skins/YOURSKIN/customer/blocks/locations to get your blocks (sideboxes).
