Ranking is Dead in Google

Excerpt from XX Forum:

Is ranking really dead? I was watching a video from Bruce Clay, talking about how Google is building the Serps based on user experience. The results are based on your location, browsing/searching habits and much more. What that means is if 50 of us search for the term “Blue Widget” We could possibly all get 50 different top 10 rankings based on the new way Google is creating your results. He claims that there are over 200 new changes Google is going to implement.

Google is changing a lot of things these days…google wave…new orkut…and now this…looks like they are on a spree!! this is good from user point of view…but not from SEO experts.
Google is ultimately aiming for a quality user experience so sites that force users to click off via ads could well be punished.
On this page you can compare old and new Google: http://www.comparecaffeine.com/

Here is Matt Cutts from Google replying saying that Ranking is not as important now: Google Ranking is Dead

He is pointing to analytics.
Matt is saying that in 2009 it is all about Marketing. Building Buzz. Mentioned making videos and Content.

Still leading to social media trending. They are still pushing twords good content not spam. Video sitemaps is is big deal too.

He aslo mentioned that Black Hat SEO was getting more malicious. He was saying White hat was long term.

Sub domains are no longer an advantage too.
Having more quality content and being user-friendly on your landing pages is a must. It does seem to play a bigger part in the overall rankings of sites.

Google is going to force you to use Adwords if you want to have a decent chance of hitting your target market, smart on their part.

What will this mean for us doing SEO/SEM? What will we need to change in order to meet the needs of our clients and our sites?

I know it must be all about analytics, ROI, Bounce rate etc…

I guess I should toss out ranking manager?

I would love to hear your feed back on this.

Thanks.

Hi Indy,

It would be beneficial to provide a link back to the original forum as (no disrespect intended) this post seems to be more relative to 3rd party services at this time.

Sincerely,

Hi Jesse,

I may not provide the link, but this thread is not a advertisement. It’s just a point of attention. Because I think 90% of people who have a online store don’t know who is their BOSS. You can guess who it is, I hope you all know that. If you don’t follow the boss guide lines, you will lose.

I tend to agree with Jesse. I stopped reading most of Indys posts because most of them just seem to be an advertisement for her services.

She has 119 posts in one month! Most of them are very general in nature and unrelated to cs-cart.

Hi Triplets, now, I have 121 posts and this one was unnecessary. Sorry but I am ca. 12 hours/day online, others maybe 2…

Just for what its worth… and nothing against Indy at all, I have found several of her posts very helpful and full of great info.

This news is old news, and google serp’s have been displaying personalized for more than 1 year. Google has been using personalized, Geo based, and user habit search results for a long time and the change to the newest Google engine (Which comes after Jan 1st to avoid Holiday shopping disruptions like the “Florida Update” of 2003 did) is just the final release, coming out of beta.

To learn more - just google “Matt Cutts + personalized search”, you will see it has been a work in progress since late 2006.

From the standpoint of a developer with more than 200 affiliate websites of my own, and more than 15 managed e-commerce sites for my clients, I can tell you that the impact is minimal on product based sites. On the other hand, if you have coupon based sites, or information based sites, the impact is pretty noticable, as Google will direct “ITS” visitors to sites that the browser is either closest to, has visited before, or bookmarked in its Google dashboard.

From the view of a content builder who published 50 pages of content every day across many websites - I can tell you to just forget about SEO completely… and focus on your content, onsite linking, and inbound marketing first! Everything else will fall into place on its own.

Content IS King - and ALL of your sites content should be unique to you! That means… no boilerplate product titles, no boilerplate product descriptions. Rewrite them… make them your own. Check them in Copyscape.

The more time you spend worrying about SEO - the farther behind you will end up! Worry about what YOU can control. Your site. Google lives and thrives on CONTENT, the MORE unique and niche relevant content you have on your site, the better you are!

Marketing - Indy does SEO work, more secrets mean more profitability.

What do you mean? The link to the video? No, the link is free for everyone, we have just used a embed code of this video.

I can make a DIY SEO trade for CS Cart users, but I don’t think they will buy all the tools and subscriptions which are necessary to do it right. Yes, you’r right, SEO has secrets too, like everybody.

Indy, shame on you for being in a hurry & not posting the secret link!

And Yes… Google is Evil !

Cannot argue with that!

AND they DO control the internet and know EVERY little thing about your website(s).

Yep, the amount of “control” that they have over an online business owners success is quite frightening in my opinion!

My advice, make sure your sites not ONLY rank quite well on Google, but MSN Bing, Yahoo, & all others as well !

Its such a catch-22…

I can always tell when a site may be in trouble - google referred traffic dips below the 70% mark! ANY time Yahoo and MSN/Live/Bing start sending equal amounts of traffic to a site… watch out… Google doesn’t like something, and its usually related to grey hat marketing.

I think that indy0077 has been very helpful. The company that she works with was very helpful during the switch over of my shopping cart to CS-Cart. I would highly recommend them.

I would be very interested in the information.

Thanks,

Thanks for the artice Indy, it was a good read, I also read Googles blog on the new changes. However, I do agree that this type of post would be better suited for the sitepoint forums.

I have been hearing for the past year that Content is king. Internet Retailer did an artile on it in the past 2-3 issues, and thats what everyone is saying on the webmaster forums.

I think early next year I am going to hire myself a writer to do some articles for me, or maybe write them myself. We will see how it goes.

Maybe even see if I can get someone to integrate wordpress into my site so it uses a similar looking template.

Indy,

Any thought to doing the DIY SEO trade?

Thanks,

Adam

a lot of misinformation out there. Don’t believe much of it - and especially anything google releases. Well , not saying they they don’t do some of what they say. but, they certainly don’t do as they preach.

I have stopped running scared at every new seo bit out there… marketers - run circles undoing all there good work fearing doom with each news. Only to see google just experimenting again… STAY THE COURSE — do what seems logical and don’t panic on the news… this is not the stock market…
