Copies of downloadable files in backup directory needed?

I noticed my sites disk usage was getting larger then I expected, so when I looked to into this I found that there are copies of the downloadable files in /var/downloads/backup. I know backups are important but to keep copies of downloadable files on my site to me is a waste of valuable real estate.



So the bottom line question is, before I go and delete them; Are those copies of downloadable files required to be there?

I went ahead and deleted them, no problems.

If you upgrade from admin then it does state before the upgrade process that it will back up your existing files.
