I really need some help here…
I’m based in the UK and have been looking into expanding my payment options from just Paypal, but I’m stuck!
I’ve managed to narrow my options down to Protx (or Sage Pay as it is now known) and Nochex. I’ll also need to set up a merchant account with whoever I choose as my payment gateway, but I just can’t decide between these two.
Can anyone give me any help regarding who to choose?
@doodles
I also trade in the UK and i use RBS Worldpay only because they don’t have a upper transaction limit for a single transaction like the two you mentioned.
If you set up a Merchant Account with a bank (any bank), you should be able to use any of the solutions on offer. You are not tied to any specific gateway depending on the bank you have your merchant account with. If you chose to use the solutions offered by the payment gateway allowing you to trade without a merchant account you usually have to pay more and wait longer for your hard earned cash. So i would recommend getting a proper Merchant Account with a bank.
I learnt the hard way and had to wait for an average of 30 days before i actually had the funds from a transaction in my bank account. And if you sell high priced items that can cause severe cash flow problems with your business. Now i have a proper Merchant account with a bank and have my funds much sooner.
You should also have a look at Total Web Solutions: http://www.totalwebsolutions.com/index.php?business=1&more_ecommerce=1&ecommerce_plus=1
They are quite reasonable on price.
Don’t forget, you can also take card payments with Google Checkout.

Join the Federation of Small Businesses, through them get a merchant account with Co-op (no fees), also get a large discount on Streamline fees and no fees for setting up with WorldPay.
Don’t bother with Nochex as you have to have a £200 retained balance and the number that use it is miniscule.

Graham.
I’m also in the UK, but I use PayPal Pro for all of my shops. It costs £20 per month and I use the same account for all cs-carts with a 3% fee on transactions. As soon as the money hits the account you can transfer it all straight away and takes about 3-5 working days to hit our bank account thereafter.
I’ve been using it since it was lauched and I am happy with it.
When I first started looking at merchants I wanted a system that meant I could process the orders on cs-cart directly (with a SSL certificate) and send payments via API rather than re-direct the checkout to an external site. I think this is a better experience for the buyer IMHO.
Cheers.
