Currently using mailchimp, but its rather costly 50$/mo, whats other options like madmimi or others? List containts 5k subscribers.

looks nice, using mailchimp just mainly because I like their templates but its way too expensive

Mail chimp is an excellent solution.

But, if you are using outlook, you can send bulk mail without much effort.

Numerous tutorials are there to understand, how one can send bulk mail using outlook. Try that too.

I recommend Sendpulse, they are quite cheap.

You can actually do a lot with mailing but I still don't know what is the size of you mailing list as the prices will depend on how big is your mailing list. You can check out Mailchimp. They can handle upto 2000 free initial subs and you can actually send them 10,000 mails/ months.

I saw a wordpress plugin that did this, which required a Sendy wordpress plugin to work.

The technical word for how all email is sent and received is SMTP, or "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol."
The term "email marketing" refers to a certain form of email.
Regardless of the platform you use to send your bulk/marketing email (I recommend using one like the one you suggested), you must verify that all recipients have opted-in to your list in order to achieve the best results. Spam or buying lists is a waste of money that will result in your domain/account being blacklisted.
