A customer had a failed order and wrote me:
“I’m trying to pay using a Visa “gift card” (which is essentially a debit card that is not linked to a bank account, but is simply pre-loaded with a set dollar amount) The problem, I’m guessing, is that the card is not registered to a billing address at all.”
I checked and the error code was 4001 bank declinewhich is strange as the amount was $8 and the customer is a responsible person (A professor).
Any thoughts or ideas?
They’ve used more on the card than they remember and the balance is < $8. Or, they have done autorizations on the card that leave < $8 remaining. They may have to wait 30 days for the auths to clear or the need to contact the issuing bank (they are all linked to a bank somewhere) and have them release the authorized funds that are being kept in reserve.

Good points - thank you.
As long as there is no problem on my end that I need to resolve I will leave it up to the customer.
