Never mind my original post below. I was searching via the “Name” box, which I wrongly understood to mean “user name”.

I’ve just noticed that if I try to perform a search on my users through my admin panel, no users with underscores in their user names appear in the search results. I’m not using the “use e-mail address as user name” option.
