Status of product when entered into the cart

Hi there -

Seemingly simple question, but I can't find the answer searching the forum. When a product is entered into the cart, is it still available for someone else to purchase? If yes, is there any way I can prevent that item from being sold while in someone else's cart? The cart I manage has unique items and usually has many people shopping for the same items at the same time. I'd like to set it up so that if the item is in the cart, it is 'pending' sale. Is this possible?

If I were to add every item in your store to my shopping cart and abandon it, how would anyone else purchase?

I would put a notice that the item is not theirs till paid for

Yeah, you’re right, perhaps just a notice to educate them is what’s needed. Does anyone know how long a cart remains active? Thanks for your replies! :)
