Does anyone know if someone has created a mod that will allow us to choose the amount of weight that will go for each package. Currently, our system will only quote up the the weight limit by each carrier. We use DHL and their limit is 150 pounds. I am looking for something that we can set up the weight limit for each package. When a customer orders over that, it will then split the package, get a quote on both and add them together into one quote.
Topcoderpro.com designed a mod that kind of does what you want. The mod that they designed allows you to choose what packages are shipped separate, combined (default, like it is now), or by truck (freight company).
This mod is great for items that are too heavy to be shipped combined, or to fragile.
Basically I sell aquarium supplies and some of my items need special shipping. Items like aquariums are shipped via truck and require a special shipping quote. This mod allows me to inform the customer of this, but still allows the customer to checkout with out any warnings.
Other items that I sell like certain lights are too heavy to be combined with anything else and if you try without the mod, you get a error in the checkout procedure and can’t checkout. This mod makes it so that even if someone purchases 20 lights at 100 lbs a piece they will still be able to checkout and the shipping is based off of each product and not the total order.
This mod has been great for me and I have it running on 1.3.5 sp3. I don’t know if it is exactly what you are looking for, but if it is than checkout topcoderpro.com

Thank you so much for the help! I will check it out.
Thank you. I will.
I would also recommend the shippingkit.com. Not only does it work easily, but it has made shipping even easier than it was in our previous shopping cart! Not to mention the people at shippingkit.com are easy to work with too.

Is Topcoderpro.com still around? The website is down. We are also interested in this mod.
Bill
They changed the URL (domain name)
Sorry, can’t remember it, but it is posted in a thread around here somewhere
Cool, thanks for the quick reply.
What they have is not what we need though. Clearly there are two needs when an order is heavier than carrier’s weight limit:
A. a single product is heavier than the weight limit.
B. an order composing of many light products is heavier than the weight limit.
t-cpro.com has MOD to handle A. We are looking for B. That is, we want to split heavy order consisting of many books into multiple orders so each split order can be shipped via USPS.
shippingkit.com appears to have solution B for X-Cart. I am still waiting for their quote for CS-Cart.
I note Magento has multiple packaging built in.
I’m curious - do other CS-Cart stores need to split order due to weight limit? If so, how’s that handled?
Bill
not sure if these products will help but when it comes to shipping addons/mods these are the professionals…

Was just installed it and it works GREAT!!! Huge time saver, and, as indicated in a previous post, the company is right on top of tech support for installation. I HIGHLY recommend ShippingKit.

Yeah, even though I didn’t purchase the shippingkit, they were very responsive and eager to help with my unordinary shipping process.
All of my orders are drop shipped and I receive tracking #'s via email. They said they could mod their shipping kit to parse my emails but it was going to cost me about $550. If I get to the point where I have 20 or more orders a day, I will certainly be taking them up on their offer.

Hi Bill,
What did you end up doing? I am looking for exactly what you mentioned.

Hi guys,
We are going to implement SmartShip module for CS-Cart in February-March which would handle B. As for A, what is the desired functionality of the feature?
atm, we are reconsidering features of SmartShip module for CS-Cart.
ps.
nice to hear all your kind words about our services ta

Are these guys down or gone now? I have been trying to go to their site for a couple of weeks now and it just says they are “moving.”

Part of the topcoderpro mod was to allow certain items to be shipped via truck (freight) instead of UPS or Fedex. Basically it was setup to give the customer a message that the store would contact them with a shipping estimate, but still allow the customer to check out.
What is your SmartShip module going to do exactly? I am hoping that it will allow the admin to decide what items are going to be shipped combined or separate, but that might just be my hope.
Also will the SmartShip mod be setup for 1.3.5 sp4 or for 2.0. Either way is fine with me, but I plan on upgrading to 2.0 once it is proven stable.
Thanks for your time,
Brandon

It splits order items into packages automatically using product volumes at checkout.
There is a setting (per product) to allow the item to be shipped combined or separate. The order shipping cost is calculated as sum of package rates.
When order is placed, the packages are displayed on the order details page (admin back-end) where admin is able to re-pack order items if necessary. Also admin is able to generate shipping labels per package if the UPS Ship or FedEx Ship modules are installed (we are going to add other carriers support a bit later).
