Responsive Themes In Cs 4.2.1 Seem Flawed

So for the past couple of weeks we have been testing a responsive theme from the updated version of CS 4.2.1. Overall the site looks pretty good, but it also seems to have some serious problems with image sizes.

Here is why we feel this way:

  1. One of our sites uses lower quality images which are smaller. While this site loads fast, the images look like crap because the “responsive” part of the site stretches the images way too large and they become pixelated. If I go back to the normal site, which is where we went back to, the images look fine.

  2. On site 2 the images are set with the smallest size of the image being 1200 so that it meets ebay policies and so the images look better. The problem with this is the images load VERY slow on any device we use. Likewise you get very poor results from not only places like GT Metrix, but if your site is going to respond that slow Google won't be too fond of it either. Low results because of the speed and also because their are no “sizes” assigned to any of the images due to the responsive side. This site is reverted back to the normal skin too.

I have considered uploading thumbnails for the site with the large images, but have not tested yet. My worry is I guess you have to guess what size is optimal as you don't know when it is going to stretch the image and look terrible or if it is too large and causes the page to load slow.

Either way, as much as I would love to get the responsive side going I just do not feel that what is in CS 4.2 it is ready for prime time.

Hello,

Hard lessons I learned in 4.2.1:

  • disable and burn the cs-cart image zoom. It slows everything down huge… it's terrible. Get Magiczoon plus if you need it.

  • disable ajax pagination in config. It's also a dog.

  • make sure you have a dedicated server with RAID 5 SSD drives. It's well worth it.

  • Do not use google fonts. Slows the site down big time.

  • make sure your site does not have any third party scripts. Slows it down.

  • disable any unnecessary or unused addons. They slow the site down.

I am also playing with latest cart since release date. SEO addon removes / from links. Resizable images should be a feature to enable or disable but not default…
