Has anyone attempted to place products in a cms page? For example: a store is selling food, we have some recipes pages/subpages in the cms, and we would like to show the ingredients / products for a specific recipe

Best way is to use a central content block of 'filltype' products. You can then have them fill manually or by some pre-determined method. You can place the new block above or below the main-content.
If you are wanting to embed links to products within your page then you should use the SEO name associated with the product you want to reference.
