At the moment a stock item will come up with the default colour or size or whatever which may be out of stock so the first thing a customer sees is “out of stock”
(If using that display method or a count if showing that as a field.)
What cs needs is a default starting option of not chosen - that says something like please choose your option - where the in/out of stock is shown.
then when a colour is chosen it shows the stock status for that colour
The same problem exists when the stock status is shown in things like the categories - list without options - it says in stock when only the default one that cscart looks at is or the reverse when the default one is out of stock even though all the other variations might be in stock
Not needed by accident discovered a solution to this.
have the variant as the first one but delete it in the stock after rebuilding stock
yeah, this really needs to be fixed by CS-Cart. thanks for the workaround but it’s not ideal to have to manually do this for every product that is added to a shop. also, every person that ever adds a product to the shop will need to know this. it should be automatic.

Has anyone worked out how to get this to work!
I have set product options to “Required” but it just selects the 1st entry in the Select Box, as the default, and seems to regard this as having been “selected” by the user!!!

Answered my own question!
On the Products “General” tab.
Set the “Options type” to “Sequential”.
