We want to give all new customers a % off their first order. How can we do this?

you can do it like this (it’s the only way I know of):
Add cart promotion / Conditions / Add Condition: Users: select the “Not In” option, and the add all the users you already have on your shop.
This way, all new users will have the 10% off (after you choose the bonus in “Bonuses” of course"
But that will not give it too any new customers on their first order.
It will only give the discount to new registered costumers

We were thinking of doing a promo like this, buts whats to stop someone from re-registering under a different user name or email address and claiming the 10% discount over and over again?
that wouldnt bother me to much, at least its a sale?

Depends on your margins I suppose. Ours are not high and our products are expensive. So if I make 20% on a $1000 product and deduct that by 5% or 10% for every time the same customer registers again and again, that doesn’t do me much good.
I agree getting a customer is job #1, but at what cost. I guess this is a promo that works for some, but not all, just like everything in life.

Someone would have to have multiple email addresses, most people will not be bothered with that. Also If we keep finding multiple accounts with the same home address we will bar them and not send an order to that address.
What is the price of a new customer? Has anybody got a answer for that?

Since CSC doesn’t verify email addresses, a customer could use any made up email they please. There’s a uservoice idea to allow for email verification but for now if I go with this promo, like you suggested I’ll have to validate the billing address has only been used once which could be time consuming, but might be worth it to gain a customer.
