[SOLVED]
When I place the a test order, I get no confirmation email to the test user or the admin about a new order.
However, if I change the status of the order, all get the confirmation.
Is there anything in the settings that would not allow to send the initial email?

EDIT: YES, I found it, all I had to do is to go to admin->orders->order_statuses and edit open orders…

In the Admin Area click on the Order Statuses link under Orders. Edit a status and check Notify Customer. This will flag all orders with this status to send emails out from now on.
