Some big boys just like playing with Magento.
Magento is as oscommerce, zen-cart, etc. free and a lower category.
For professional business use cs-cart.
More stable, easy to use, faster, etc…
The truth is the big boys pour a lot of money into customizing Magento. The Magento company makes a lot of money! However, Magento is still a bad software.

i don’t think magento is bad software…
magento team understands that we need INVOICING and CREDIT MEMOs.
cs-cart doesn’t up to now.
sure, i can install an invoicing software and try to link cs-cart to the invoicing.
but do i want to do that? I just want to run a shop, I don’t want 10 systems.
i guess all carts have advantages and disadvantages.
personally, i have a problem with cs-cart taking a long time to load on my VPS. it uses a lot of requests for gif files to make the GUI. I hope this will be better when i cut down the theme.
I think it will be a better chance to compare after testing the coming versions magento 1.2.2 and CS-cart 2.0.
Currently
Cs Cart has a true configurator but unfortunately but does not support attributes and probably no future plans either.
Cs-cart surely has better support. It is also much easier to start with Cs-cart from the begining. Cs-cart has default skins and colours unfortunately are out of any art. touch!! Future 2.0 promising although I have not fully tested.
Currently Magento has bundle, grouped products, single and config products and easier to build with attiributes but no configurator. (In the past it used to be very difficult a hell to build single /config products, but now easier ). (True sku part number ) .
Very flexible and strong attibutes management. Multistore management is a good feature .
Many Magento users have unsolved issues especially for product picture uploads
etc… Currently unfortunately a buggy choice but promising for the future
Yes, so I am watching both of them! And I am sorry to say “bad” about Magento but it means too buggy!
Plus, there is NO SHIPPING ZONES IN MAGENTO!!!

That means you can not group Countries into Zones! Wahhh…Very “Sweet”, Magento!!!
i think i may have to swtich to magento in the future. cs-cart’s quotes for extended modifications are a little ridiculous, and the community is very small and i dont think has grown that much since. magento on the other hand has a very vibrant community with lots of extensions and 3rd party service integration.
Magento is only 1 year old and they have already incorporated many great modules, can you imagine the enhancements this software will produce in another 12 months, and all for free.
As for (Buggy) this is something you will not get away from, all software is (Buggy).
Magento has a very vibrant community with lots of extensions and 3rd party service integration. Magento is now at 1.3.0
[quote] Added support for customer file upload and date/time/datetime custom options
Described all methods in WSDL for SOAP web-services to improve compatibility with .NET, Java and other languages
Frontend Flat Catalog and improved performance
Added ability to create a sortable attribute and use it on specific category

The “free” factor is definately a selling point for Magento, but after playing around with it for quite a while I still don’t get it. The structure makes no since to me. I tried modifying the templates to meet my design needs and just couldn’t figure it out. Just to get the site from 3 columns to 2 columns was a ton of work.
It is very possible that I just couldn’t figure it out because it was over my head and is prbably fine for most other people, but the structure of CS-Cart just makes more since to me.
I am not really loving the new structure of 2.0 though. I am learning, but I do like the structures of 1.3.5 and prior better.
As for the community of Magento, I am a registered member and have spent quite a bit of time on their forums. One of the biggest things that I noticed is that most questions are answered as if you already know the stucture of the cart and know where to look. For example if you want to change a design issue on this forum most people post the change like:
change skins/you-skin/customer/products_pages/your-template.tpl
But on the Magento forum I noticed:
change your-template
And you are expected to know what they mean.
I didn’t like this and since I didn’t understand the structure of the cart from the get go, most of these solutions were no help to me.
Anyways, just my 2 cents.

Magento software out of the box is free for now, however, it is possible this could change in the future if they determine that their current business model isn’t generating the profits they require or desire!

Have you requested any quotations for custom modifications from Magento yet? Considering this is the main source of their revenue, I highly doubt there custom programming rates could be considered a deal?
I personally like how magento front end looks over cs but I’m completely lost when it comes to trying to figure out something. It really is not user friendly unless you are a programmer it looks like.
Notice, there is NO SHIPPING ZONES IN MAGENTO!!! Can you call it a shopping cart? No!!!
I’ve had some custom mods done by the CS-Cart team in the past and thought they were very reasonable.
$100 dollars or so for some extra functionality that brought more sales to my site was money well spent. At the time it worked out about £60 in our money and we got that back in the next 5 sales.
This was a couple of years ago so I don’t know whether they have hiked up their prices since then?

What kind of Mods?
Lee Li Pop
We ended up having quite a few (not all for $100 each though) mods done by the team for our 1.3.4 store. Many of them have since appeared in newer versions;
New products
Advanced promotions
Advanced create order
Advanced product options
Reward points
SEO URL’s
It took a few months to get everything finished and there was an enormous amount of bug testing but overall we were very pleased with the service.
“enormous amount of bugs”
I only notice this one…
I actually said “enormous amount of bug testing”.
Some of the mods ended up being very complex. The promotions mod for example. For my piece of mind I tested every combination of conditions and actions. I think it ended up being about 800?
Yes, there did end up being some bugs but it was an acceptable amount considering the complexity of what we wanted. They were also corrected fairly quickly.
Anyway, back to Magento. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t think the Varien team would charge anywhere near the same amount for this type of work.
