PHP 5.6 is the latest stable release. Is CS-Cart compatible?
I would guess that it's “compatible” but doubt that it's “supported”.

This one could possibly pose some problems:self, parent and static are now always case insensitive But with V4, they adopted new coding standards but did not address these keywords. It “should” be oka, but something to be aware of.
But for the most part, it looks pretty benign…

If you upgrade php version you should upgrade the sql version to the latest version to.
Not only the php, that gives problems to other older server programs.
