How to create transparent Bit mapped (bmp) images?

Hi,

I have a program that comes with transparent bit mapped images. They all have a black background, but the background is transparent when inserted onto another image.

Everything I read is that only gif images can be transparent. Obviously, this is not true, since I have transparent bmp images.

Does anyone know how to create transparent bmp images?

I have gimp, snagit, Microsoft Digital Image (older software), but would buy an inexpensive software to do this.

Thanks for your help.

Bob
