Help Please!

Hi All,

I just took my site/store live with Adwords today but have been running a live version on my domain for a few weeks so it’s been indexed by google.

The site is www.customautotrend.com - the issue I just noticed is that when I search “customautotrend” in Google - this is the first result that I get:

http://customautotrend.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi

That’s definitely not what I want my customers seeing.

I know that there’s a fix for this but I don’t want to try anything live that could ‘break’ the site so I’m coming to the board for guidance.

I’m thinking that it can be fixed in robots.txt by disallowing /cgi-sys/ but I’m not sure the exact correct way to write the line of code and even less sure if that’s the right fix.

Any help is mucho appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. - Basil Marceaux for President 2012  !

Addendum:

Typing in http://www.customautotrend.com/ works fine with the ‘www’ prefix.

If I type http://customautotrend.com it directs to the wierd cPanel page.

wtf!?

Your DNS server is not configured properly

So… that means that I need to…?

I’m sorry but I understand the concept of DNS but not so in-depth that I’d know how to act on the info above.

Could you please elaborate? (I apologize for my ignorance.)

Thanks,

Jerry

In CPanel under Domains go to Redirection and set Permanent to all without “WWW” to be redirected to WWW. Or ask you hosting company to do it for you.

It’s not that Noman, his DNS records are incorrect on the server.

Jerry, I am guessing that you are on a VPS or dedicated server since using your own name servers. You will need to get your server administrator or host to add the proper A records for your domain as DNSstuff.com reports they are not supplying this information.

See the 2 attachments that indicate this problem. The text file is a test of common ISP DNS servers around the world as to whether they have your domains records cached.

EDIT: It seems this forum resizes image attachments. Here is a link to one you can read http://securecarthost.com/files/customautotrend.jpg

Thanks, S-Combs - you’ve been a huge help. My hosting provider sent me these messages:

Some lines were missing from your httpd.conf - what I did was back up your account and then recreated it from the backup to recreate all of the appropriate records in the httpd.conf and on your nameservers.

I just double checked and it’s now all working 100% as it should. The server previously on “List Accounts” was showing “IP Unknown” which is why the DNS server wasn’t responding properly but now it’s responding as it should.

It can take a couple of hours for this to clear up world-wide due to the nature of DNS so if it’s not working 100% for you just yet do give it some time. We did test and verify that it is indeed now working as it should.

Does that seem right? As I said, I’m still learning about DNS and everything that does on with nameservers and such - I’m more of a design/marketing/business guy still learning the ropes of web-specific knowledge.

Again, thanks for your help - it means alot.

I have waited over 12 hours before replying in case there was still some propagation taking place however these errors do still exist with your DNS Jerry.

I see that you chose to use NSD instead of BIND for your Name server. Has your host supplied proper ‘external’ caching nameservers in resolv.conf since NSD will only serve zones? Unless your VPS is very limited in resources I recommend switching to BIND instead of NSD as it is much more reliable but does have a larger memory footprint because it handles its own caching without an outside source.

Another thing confusing about your records is that it appears that you are setup for a dedicated IP however that is also not resolving properly to your domain.

Sorry, without access to your server I can only guess at certain things.

If this host still fails to get this corrected for you soon, I would be happy to help with this and ensure the rest of your server is properly configured and fully secured. That cost would be $60 and would include a month of follow up support as well to ensure everything is working as it should. Your site is working just fine on my end and searching on google is not bringing up the page mentioned earlier, if you encounter any problems like this your host should be able to fix them no problem - Sno
