It’s been duplicated in the products_details.tpl template. That is just strange.
Is this using an addon by any chance?
No, I do not use any addon with changes.
It also happens in Category view.
That’s weird. It shouldn’t even be in that area. Disable Comments and Reviews and see what happens. If it’s gone then uninstall and reinstall the addon.
I’ve done everything you said and continues to happen the same problem.

In //skins//blocks/product_templates/default_template.tpl find the stars you don’ t want by looking for {$smarty.capture.$rating} and comment it out by putting {* } around it like so {{$smarty.capture.$rating}*}
You can do the same in /blocks/list_templates/product_list.tpl. Not sure why this happened though, haven’t seen it mentioned here before.
It’s weird, but, in those files there is only one {$smarty.capture.$rating}.
So, do not know why the stars are duplicated.

hmm check /skins//common_templates/price.tpl
Neither is there a “{$smarty.capture.$rating}” in that file… 
Your best bet would to go into Design > Design Mode and then enable customization mode. Through here you can get into all the templates used on a page so just go to a product detail page and see which tpl controls each rating area and then remove the one you don’t want.
Did anyone ever figure this out?
I have found one set of stars in common_templates/product_data.tpl - they are the ones that display right below the title in the product details page.
However, the set of stars I want to either modify or get rid of are the ones that appear next to the price. Those stars also appear on the product list page (category level).
Unfortunately Design Mode is useless because the window that displays the template files pops up over the area I’m trying to edit and I can’t narrow it down. If there is a way around this, I’m all ears.
