I am gonnna install v4 in a sub directory and do a test import from my live store but seem to remember a thread that the previous import tool in V3 made changes to the “old” v2 store rendering it unusbale to be used once the import was done …can anyone confirm if this is the case for v3 to v4.02 using the import tool or am I safe to proceed and then work on the “new” site in the sub directory till ready to replace in root.

In my case import tool crash old store front and I will need to restore it from backup but Im not sure it is normal situation.
I just completed an import from 3.0.6 to 4.0.2 and it appeared to have worked perfect.
It would be nice though to get a definitive answer to this though.
Would it not be possible to first copy the old site to a subfolder leaving it running while the copy is independant. Then update from the copy not the liver store.

Yeah, good point I thought of this after just to try but was unsure of the licensing aspect…Ill give it a go

No licensing issue if it's on the same domain. I think you best copy the database to a new one too. Here's where a cloud host is an advantage as you can pick a different database server to the live one.
