Merely bringing up something I read, Ive never used “X-Crap” and never will, CS is installed on my server for good, even if it means I have to find my own ways to keep it upto date.
And yes, for those highly modified store its never, ever, ever, going to be easy to upgrade no matter how ingenious the software is but as somebody else posted “a cs download containing changed files only” would make life a little easier.
My upgrade problems using Store Manager were server-based. I would get CPU Overload errors and the site would shut down. As a result I am in the process of moving hosts. The development team will upgrade my store for a price and my feelings about this are that this is e-commerce and I am making money so I am glad to spend money on anything that will increase my exposure and benefit my business. If I were in a brick and mortar store I would pay for upgrades to my store. It’s the cost-of-doing-business.
Would you give your products away? Of course not! So why balk at the prospect of doing the work necessary to make your store a better environment and one that will help you to sell more of your product?
The work is there to be done whether you do it or pay for someone else to do it for you. If it is beyond me…I pay! The ‘help at a click of a button or little white pill that will make everything better’ approach is a trap and IMO results in zero progress.

I am pleased to report that I ran Store Manager 1.1 without incident upgrading from an unmodified CS-C 1.3.4 to 1.3.4sp2. Thius may not seem like much but I was getting absolutely nowhere with the original version of Store Manager. Everything worked very smoothly so the developers are obviously working diligently to correct whatever problems exist with the software.
I do hope that the developers will consider creating a Mac (and possibly, Linux) version of Store Manager. We are planning on moving from Windows to Macs over the next year and this will be very helpful (and, I believe, very attractive) to all store owners running on Macs.

that would be great to see. However, I run a Mac and I used parallels (virtual machine software) to run the updater in windows. There are also some people working on software for the mac that will make running windows programs within a mac no different than running mac programs. I forget the name of it but I saw it demoed and it’s pretty sweet.

I havn’t tried yet, as I have more than enough windows machines, but was going to install windows on a intel mac…
I realize that Parallels and Boot Camp are possibilities and that may well be the route Mac-based CS-Cart users are forced to pursue. However, I find it frustrating to see that we are going from a platform-agnostic upgrade solution to a Windows-only solution with Store Manager. As well as Store Manager worked, I would have been jusr as happy, if not more so, with the old server-based Upgrade Center approach.

I agree with you Bob. I am not excited that I used upgrade manager to update, but now I have to download the files down on my Mac side. Although if i wasn’t lazy, I probably could traverse my Windows drive and copy it to my mac where I do my development.

Just out of curiosity, what program are you using for file comparisons on the Mac? I have been using Beyond Compare on Windows and would like to find a Mac solution which is as flexible.
