Creating New Store In Subdirectory Vs New Server

We are looking to create a development copy of our store so that we can attempt upgrades to CS Cart, Unitheme, etc without knock on effects on our actual site.

I know that the CS Cart documentation says to create the store in a subdomain. Our server technician advises that it is best practice to keep them completely separate. Are there any potential drawbacks to either approach? Thank you in advance!

Both solutions are good. If you create a dev store in a subdirectory, remember to only give access to that subdirectory. If it is in a separate location, there is no such problem. We use both methods interchangeably depending on the needs.
