Contemplating Upgrade...

Our store is currently operating on v 2.0.15. It has been stable and does as good of job as it can (I think).

I’ve never been one to upgrade just because an upgrade is available. Though this attitude has caused some support issues (other software) in the past. Since I am 2 full versions behind I’m thinking it might be time.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your time.

Eric

Upgrading from 2.x to 4.x is not trivial. I don't know how much you've researched this, but it's not simply a matter of going to the upgrade center and hitting the upgrade button. There's WAY more to it than that. I'm not a programmer or developer by any stretch–not even much of an HTML or CSS coder any more–and I have managed the upgrade. But it was quite taxing for me. Make sure you fully understand the upgrade process before you begin.

kingsleypress thanks for the reply. I have come to find out it is a multiple step process, something like 8 upgrades. Also will need to have the servers php version upgraded. Definitely something I will need assistance with.

Thanks,

Eric

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless you have a compelling reason to change, why would you go to the expense of doing so if it's not going to either save you or make you the investment you will put out? Think “business decision”.

I agree with you but I often wonder if perhaps there might be hidden reasons such as a security upgrade that has not been announced.

[]tbirnseth Thanks for the confirmation. I guess that's part of what I'm asking. Will upgrading improve anything? SEO is something this software seems to have always lacked. I have not come across much of anything that indicates that has been improved significantly. The “structured data” element in the latest version looks like one improvement.

[
]Traveler While there could be some unknown security vulnerability in either my current version or newer versions, I feel that's a risk we all take using software that puts us in the public eye. Routine precautions, following advice provided from members of this forum and CS Cart have, seemingly, been sufficient to thwart any unwanted intrusions (that I'm aware of). Of course, it's always best to be on guard!

There are always hidden security changes that appear benign in the changelog. Cs-cart does not openly discuss or acknowledge security issues.

However, almost any site is vulnerable to a professional hacker. But cs-cart is pretty secure in my opinion (though I've had discussions with hackers that think otherwise - but these guys are way beyond my knowledge of hacking techniques). In my experience, cs-cart is small enough that it's not really targeted by most hackers. There simply isn't enough volume of customers to make any money at $0.25/credit-card number.

Also in my experience, the actual “intrusion” has occurred via methods outside of cs-cart (other 3rd party SW, an insecure site setup, compromised cpanel account password, etc.) other than the one via the payment methods back in May-14.
