It depends a lot on what you want to point it at. Writing add-ons, working with the REST API, maintaining an existing store? Those are quite different jobs. And would you let it near a live store, or only a local copy?

All of the above, mainly new add-on (features) and extending the API so useable for a frontend
firstly on dev store and if testing okay then move to live
