I am trying to change the order of products. The list is alphabetical and I would like the list to be in a particular order. Is this possible?

Go to Catalog/Product Categories
Do a search selecting the product category you want to change the sort order. The resulting screen will show you the products in this category and the column called POS will be shown too.
After you have entered your sort order and saved you also need to make sure that Design/Appearance Settings has Product list default sorting set to Default.
