Cart Keeper add-on by cs-commerce

The add-on handles two everyday CS-Cart situations where a product silently disappears from the cart.

The product ran out of stock. The core removes such a product on the next cart recalculation, leaving the customer wondering where the item went. With the add-on the row stays in the table: it is dimmed, an “Out of stock” label sits under the image, and the item is excluded from totals, shipping and the order. As soon as the product is back in stock, the label changes to “Back in stock” and the customer returns the item with one click — or the add-on does it by itself when auto-return is enabled.

The customer does not want to buy everything at once. Every cart row gets a checkbox. Unchecking it sets the item aside: the row stays where it was, but the item is excluded from totals and from the order. A “Select all” row at the top of the table sets aside or returns all items at once.

  • A set-aside item returns to the order with the same quantity and options, to the same place in the table.
  • When every item is set aside, the page does not switch to “Your cart is empty”: the table stays on screen, the “Proceed to checkout” button becomes inactive, and a direct attempt to check out gets a clear message.
  • Auto-return applies to out-of-stock items only — whatever the customer set aside manually is never touched.
  • The settings cover auto-return of items that are back in stock, what happens to unchecked items on the next visit, a limit on kept items, similar products for out-of-stock items and a back-in-stock notification subscription right in the cart (since version 1.1.0).
  • On Multi-Vendor the add-on supports separate checkout per vendor (Direct Customer-to-Vendor Payments): each vendor gets its own table, its own “Select all” row and its own set-aside items.

The add-on steps in only where the core removes a product: when the stock is not zero but merely lower than needed, the core still reduces the quantity in the cart by itself. Items not in the order are saved in the database together with the cart: a registered customer sees them after signing in from any device (since version 1.1.0).

Works with CS-Cart and Multi-Vendor from version 4.3.1, in the CS-Cart, CS-Cart Ultimate, Multi-Vendor, Multi-Vendor Plus and Multi-Vendor Ultimate editions, through the standard hooks of the cart template of the Responsive theme and themes based on it. The full manual is in the documentation.

Version 1.1.0 is out

The main change: items not included in the order are now saved in the database together with the cart, not just in the session. A registered customer gets the list of out-of-stock and unchecked items back after signing in from any device or browser — together with the cart. A guest gets it in the same browser as long as the saved-cart cookie lives (a week by default), just like regular cart items.

What else is new:

  • Similar products. An out-of-stock item gets a “Similar products” button: the dialog offers other variations of the same product first, then products from the same category within a close price range — in-stock items only, each with an “Add to cart” button. The number of products, the price range and the search in subcategories are configurable.
  • Back-in-stock notification. The standard CS-Cart “Notify me when this product is back in stock” checkbox can be shown right in the row of an out-of-stock item in the cart. Enabled in the settings; works for products whose out-of-stock action is “Sign up for notification”.
  • Unchecked items on the next visit. A new setting: remember the customer’s choice (the default) or check all items again on the next visit — after a break longer than the session lifetime or after signing in on another device.
  • Cart layout. The add-on detects the cart markup of the active theme by itself: UniTheme2 builds the cart with div blocks starting from version 4.19.1.c, and a dedicated set of templates is used for it. The layout can also be selected manually. Compatibility with recent UniTheme2 versions is fixed along the way.
  • Out-of-stock items now sit at the bottom of the cart table and return to their place once they are back in stock. When only items not in the order are left in the cart, the cart icon in the header gets a dot marker, and a click on it opens the cart page directly.

The update is available through the CS-Cart Upgrade Center. The documentation has been updated for version 1.1.0.
